The 4D cross-platform dynamic picture tool.
4D Picture Workshop is a plug-in for 4th Dimension, offering both an external area to be included in your 4D layouts, and a set of commands and tools for onscreen and offscreen image handling.
4D Picture Workshop does NOT require Apple's QuickTime, whether on MacOS or on Windows.
4D Picture Workshop is compliant with Twain technology for acquisition using digital devices such as scanners and cameras.
There are two possible picture displays in a 4D Picture Workshop area:
- Grid mode, showing thumbnails of a set of pictures.
- Single picture mode, showing a single picture and including a graphic interface to perform various operations on the image.
A code-controlled dynamic link is maintained between the display and any possible source, such as 4D tables, variables and arrays, folders and documents on disk.
4D Picture Workshop version 1 supports the following picture formats: PICT, GIF, BMP, JPEG and TIFF (10 supported compression modes). |

Display and source
The dynamic source for grid mode display can be a 4D selection, an array or a folder/directory.
The dynamic source for single picture mode can be a 4D record, a variable, an array item or a file/document.
In this mode, the area includes tools for rotation, flip, dragging a "rect" selection, crop, zoom, move as well as any custom tool the developer wants to add.
Features and commands
Programming 4D Picture Workshop is handled by way of 75 commands, organized into 9 themes.
Constants are available for parameters and error codes when needed.
- Grid mode: set the source (folder, array, 4D selection), create a subset, switch the area to single picture mode.
- Single picture mode: set the source (file, variable, 4D record), revert or save, create a thumbnail, automatic zoom, switch the area to grid mode.
- Tools: create custom tools, set their icons and callback project methods.
- Actions: let the user work on the picture using standard and custom tools, or drive the actions through 4D code. Zoom, rotate, flip, resize, crop.
- Edit: control the edit menu through commands. Copy, cut, paste, clear, cancel/redo.
- Offscreen image handling: all transformations (rotation, etc.), display size, bitmap size and resolution, printing dimensions. Picture to blob and blob to picture for any of the five supported formats. Compression, file format conversion.
- Direct file handling: read and write pictures stored in documents on disk. Load, save, convert, get and set information, thumbnails, "IPTC" embedded metadata, compression (JPEG, TIFF), file format conversion.
- Powerful configuration settings: properties for the area's behavior, 4D callback method for each event, error handling.
- Twain acquisition: single (one line of code to open the device, acquire to file or variable, then close the device) or multiple (to a folder or a 4D array). |

| licenses |
4D Picture Workshop licenses are cross-platform. No need to differentiate MacOS / Windows.
There is no such thing as the development / deployment scheme: a 4D single user (4D, 4D Runtime, 4D Engine) developer needs a 1 user license, a Server developer team needs one license per developer using 4DPW.
There is no PW_Register type of registration, except for OEM compiled applications (unlimited deployment licenses).
In server mode, licenses are entered on 4D Server. It is possible to combine licenses: two 1 user licenses and one 5 users license add up to one 7 users license. |
